Sepsis

Sepsis is a deadly condition caused by the body’s excessive inflammatory response to infection that frequently causes damage to vital organs and can lead to death. It is the leading cause of deaths in intensive care units.

Up to 50% of sepsis survivors suffer from long-term physical and/or psychological effects.

There are currently no treatments.

How The Florey is making a difference

In pioneering research, led by Florey Professors Yugeesh Lankadeva and Clive May, a mega-dose of sodium ascorbate has been shown to reverse the devastating impact of sepsis on the brain, cardiovascular system and kidneys.

The drug infusion contains the same amount of ascorbate as more than 2,000 oranges, and has a neutral pH that makes it possible to deliver it safely in a hospital setting.

This treatment has been shown to be effective in preliminary human trials, which are focusing on ensuring the drug’s safety and ability to normalise blood pressure.

If successful, The Florey-patented drug could become a low-cost treatment and a breakthrough in ICU care.
