Students of the Florey Institute
For students, by students
The Students of the Florey Institute (SOFI) is a student organisation affiliated with and funded by The Florey, run by current students elected each year. SOFI’s goal is to support and empower our exceptional students through academic, professional, social events and networking. SOFI proudly represents a strong and diverse community of like-minded people with a passion for neuroscience and mental health, driving tomorrow’s discoveries.
Supporting you – personally and professionally
Being student led, SOFI understands that graduate study is more than just producing a thesis. Year-round, SOFI organises a wide range of events to ensure that you have opportunity to gain and elevate your academic and professional skills, to best prepare you for your career onwards.
- Shut Up and Write
- Statistics for Neuroscientists
- Pizza talks
- Science Communication Workshop
- The ‘How to’ of resume writing
- Careers Panel
- Grant Writing workshop
- Time Management workshop
Likewise, SOFI wants you to thrive while studying and therefore hosts many social events throughout the year, to make sure you have the support you need and the opportunity to connect with other students across lab groups, while enjoying lots of free food.
- International Food Festival
- Crafternoon (R U OK day)
- Wear it Purple
- Student Publication Awards Night
Be part of the SOFI community
SOFI embraces everyone and wants all students welcome and included. SOFI encourages every student to actively take part of the events. By participating in the many events, you will:
- create lasting friendships and scientific relationships
- build confidence to speak about your research publicly
- get a break from your research to relax and have fun with other students
- gain a range of other skills that strengthens you and your employability after your studies.
Make sure that when you become part of The Florey, you sign up to the SOFI mailing list. This way you will never miss an event or opportunity.
While SOFI wants to support you in as many ways as possible, should you require support in anything related to your studies, please contact the Student support team.
