Presented by world-renowned researchers at Australia’s No. 1 university for clinical disciplines, the Specialist Certificate in Clinical Research (Neuroscience) allows you to gain formal training in clinical neuroscience research over a convenient intensive teaching block.

The only course of its kind in Australia, the Specialist Certificate is valuable for a wide range of medical and allied health professionals seeking specialist training in clinical neuroscience research.

Developed in partnership with The Florey and the NHRMC Centre for Clinical Research Excellence in Neurosciences, this course will help you conduct investigator-driven clinical neuroscience research and improve your research skills and practice.

You will undertake two subjects over two intensive teaching weeks and network with peers and research experts in the field.

Your academic coordinator, Professor Samuel F Berkovic AC, is an internationally recognised clinical neurologist and Australian Fellow researcher. He is a Laureate Professor at the University’s Department of Medicine and Radiology, Director Epilepsy Research Centre, and Director Comprehensive Epilepsy Program at Austin Health.

Week one: Clinical neuroscience research

Throughout this week, you will explore a range of research methodologies applicable to neurological disorders and learn how to pose questions to produce quality clinical research.

Outcomes: Through stimulating discussions of current research questions with expert clinical neuroscience researchers and your peers, you will develop the ability to critically appraise the literature and formulate powerful new research questions.

You will build the confidence to communicate your research and interact with basic neuroscientists and researchers in other health disciplines.

WEEK two: Neuroimaging for clinical research

Professor Alan Connelly, head of the imaging division at The Florey, leads this more advanced subject, which builds on clinical research methodology and the skills acquired in week one, and emphasises cutting-edge MR imaging techniques applied to the human brain.

Outcomes: Via face-to-face interaction with multidisciplinary researchers, you will develop a critical understanding of the latest neuroimaging methods, as well as the confidence to design your own research project in clinical neuroscience. Individual feedback will help you improve the quality of your research proposals, which is essential knowledge for successful researchers.

Upon completion of the Specialist Certificate, you will:

• Be able to design research projects using cutting-edge brain imaging or other advanced techniques as research tools.
• Have developed a high level of competency in clinical research methodologies applicable to neurological disorders.
• Know how to formulate relevant research hypotheses to generate useful clinical outcomes.
• Be able to write quality research proposals and grant applications.
