Biography
Dr Laura Ellett has over 16 years’ experience working in the field of neurodegeneration research with a particular focus on prion disease (PrD). Her career includes 9 years as a research assistant developing skills in prion handling, neuropathology and preclinical models of disease. She completed her PhD investigating the prion strain phenomenon and early clinical signs of prion disease in 2022 and joined the Florey that same year.
She has a background in nutrition, protein biochemistry, microbiology (E. coli and S. cerevisiae), paraffin histology and rodent models of neurodegeneration. She is passionate about training people in laboratory skills and inspiring the next generation of researchers.
Laura is working closely with the patient support group (the Creutzfeldt Jakob Disease Support Group Network), the national prion disease surveillance team (the Australian National Creutzfeldt Jakob Disease Registry), the Ocular Biomarkers team (University of Melbourne) and the National Dementia Diagnostics Laboratory to develop methodologies for detecting prion diseases early that can be easily adopted in the clinic.
