Dr Alemayehu Jufar
PhD, MSc
Biography
Dr Alemayehu Jufar completed his bachelor degree in public health from Hawassa University and masters degree in physiology from Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia. He completed his PhD in 2024 in physiology at the Department of Physiology, Monash University where he investigated the pathophysiology of cardiac surgery associated acute kidney injury (CSA-AKI) and brain injury, and therapies to reverse the injury to these vital organs. He also investigated the potential for recruitment of renal functional reserve (RFR) by a clinically approved mixture of amino acids as a physiological biomarker for detecting sub-clinical chronic kidney disease (CKD).
Dr Jufar’s current research focuses on investigating the underlying pathophysiological mechanisms in septic AKI and its transition to CKD, with a particular focus on the role of renal medullary hypoxia, and testing the safety and effectiveness of RFR recruitment in clinically relevant large animal recovery model of septic AKI to diagnose sub-clinical CKD.
Dr Jufar has over 13 publications in high-quality journals and is also currently the Secretary of the Florey Postdoctoral Association and the Early Career Researcher (ECR) Representative of the Australian and New Zealand Microcirculation Society.
