Thinking of doing an honours, masters or PhD at The Florey? We’re here to support you all the way. If you have the ambition and enthusiasm to become a researcher in the fields of neuroscience and mental health, apply to do your degree with us.
To study at The Florey you need to enrol through the University of Melbourne and meet the minimum entry requirements. Depending on which degree you wish to apply for, different requirements and application processes apply.

Doctor of Philosophy (PhD)
The degree of Doctor of Philosophy (Medicine, Dentistry, and Health Sciences), also known as PhD, is a research graduate degree. It is a highly respected degree where you specialise and become an expert in your field of choice.

3–4 years (full-time equivalent)

How to apply

Find your preferred project. Look through our current student opportunities, or research project search tool. You can also reach out to individual researchers to find a suitable project. - Step 3 – Apply
Once you have confirmed the opportunity to join a project, for the Doctor of Philosophy – Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences. - If you have any questions, contact Student Support.
Benefits
PhD candidates enrolled through The Florey can expect:
- an annual top-up allowance for three years after confirmation
- a travel allowance for conferences
- a laptop for the extent of your candidature.
Funding opportunities
When you apply for the PhD you are automatically considered for:
- Domestic students: the Research Training Program scholarship (RTP)
- International students: the Melbourne Research Scholarship (MRS).
Both scholarships have 2 components: a full-fee offset and a living allowance.
There are 3 scholarship rounds a year.

Master of Philosophy
The degree of Master of Philosophy (MPhil) allows you to undertake research as the sole component of your studies. Candidates undertaking an MPhil are sometimes eligible to transfer to a PhD.

Masters by coursework
This masters by coursework is a postgraduate degree. It allows you to undertake research as a major component of your studies, whilst also doing coursework. This degree is usually completed after obtaining a bachelor’s degree.

Honours
An honours degree is an extension of your undergraduate degree. Completing your honours allows you to apply for a PhD or can be credited towards your first year of a masters by coursework.

BSc(Hons) or BBmed(Hons) (as determined by your undergraduate degree)
